Do you feel like you’re just grazing through life, leaving each day at the mercy of external influences such as expectations, responsibilities, or even just for the sake of sticking to the “status quo”? It’s time to stop letting life control you. Use these steps as a guideline towards creating the life of your dreams.

  1. Commit to “me time”

Don’t be reluctant to set time aside for yourself. You are not a machine. Nobody can be at their best 100% of the time and you aren’t expected to be any different. Allow yourself time to decompress, recuperate, and enjoy life. Take a break and surround yourself with positive energy, whether that’s cuddling up to a good novel or spending time with people you love.

  1. Be kind to yourself

You’ve heard the saying, “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. But what about how you treat yourself? You are your worst critic.
As humans, it tends to be easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves. Give yourself the same compassion you show others. Self-love is not an act of arrogance as the following quote reads:

  1. Get comfortable with saying ‘no’

There is a limited amount of time in a day, a year, and your life. Decide how you spend it. Remember: it’s your life. Don’t allow others to guilt you into doing something you won’t enjoy doing. There’s a difference between being selfish and being self-aware. Live for yourself, not for someone else. Remember: it’s okay to say no, so say it with confidence!

  1. Try new things

Routine is great in certain aspects of your life; it brings a sense of comfort and assurance. But too much repetition can start to feel lifeless and purposeless Imagine all the amazing things life  has to offer outside of your comfort zone- you’ve just never been there yet. Visit a new place. Order that new entrée. You deserve to feel more than just “content”.

  1. Keep learning

In a world full of endless opportunities, there is so much to learn. Approach every situation expecting to leave with some knowledge you didn’t have before it. An open mindset allows new information to flow and process more efficiently.

  • An important key to learning, is reflection. Reflect on every experience you encounter, asking the question: “how can I grow from this?” No matter how much you already know, there is always more to learn.
  1. Stay moving

This step applies on both a physical and mental level. Being active improves blood flow, providing the mind the energy it needs to function efficiently. Plus exercise releases stress-relieving chemicals, helping you feel at ease and clear-headed. So find something that you love that gets you moving.

  1. Get sufficient sleep

After following step 6, it’s easy to see why this step follows. Sleep is essential. Without an adequate amount, you’ll begin to feel sluggish, irritable, along with other negative effects. We allow our phones time to recharge; do the same for yourself! The least we can do is treat our bodies better than we treat our cell phones.

  1. Invest in happiness

Simplify your life. Indulge in the things you love and eliminate or moderate the things you don’t. Create a positive environment for yourself. Choose to surround yourself with what makes you happy.

  1. Give

Take time out of each day to do something for somebody else. Even a small gesture can create a ripple effect of positivity.  Allow yourself to experience the joy in bringing happiness to someone else.

  1. Stay optimistic

How many times have you seen someone give up by claiming “it’s doesn’t matter anyways”? Other people’s decisions may unavoidably impact your life, but you can choose how it affects you. You have full rein to how you experience life. Keep a positive mindset and push through.

With these steps, you can prioritize yourself, your happiness, and your state of mind to take back your life. Grasp your world by the reigns and rewrite your story. Whether it’s scheduling your “me time” or planning for a new experience, savor life’s most important moments in your AT-A-GLANCE. Remember: It’s your life. Take note.
